Registrars / Officiants
Who marries you in Malta depends on the kind of ceremony you want. Catholic weddings are held in a parish church and officiated by a priest; civil weddings can be held almost anywhere — a hotel terrace, a beach, a registry office — and are officiated by a registry celebrant or an authorised civil celebrant. For destination couples, the paperwork side can feel like the hardest part: documents from your home country, translations, apostilles, and the Maltese registry's own requirements. The officiants, registrars and celebrants listed here handle both parts — the legal formalities and the ceremony itself — and many specialise in international couples. Some celebrants write fully bespoke ceremonies in multiple languages, blending traditions and readings so the service feels personal rather than procedural. Use this page to compare officiants by ceremony type (civil, religious, or symbolic), language, and the paperwork support they offer. If you're marrying in a church, pair your officiant with the right venue from the heritage and cultural hub.

A civil ceremony is performed by a registry or authorised celebrant and can take place at the Public Registry, a licensed venue, or outdoors with permission. A Catholic ceremony requires a parish church (or permission to marry elsewhere), pre-marriage preparation, and the couple's baptismal and confirmation documents. Symbolic blessings are also possible if you complete the legal formalities in your home country.
Required paperwork for destination couples
Civil weddings need birth certificates, a Certificate of No Impediment, and free-status documents, all apostilled and translated. Catholic weddings add baptism and confirmation certificates and a mixed-religion dispensation where relevant. Start paperwork 3–6 months before the date; an officiant or celebrant who handles paperwork can shorten this significantly.
